Bring GIS, CAD and LandXML road data into one editable model
OpenStreetMap is rarely the only source a traffic study needs. Road Mesh also reads GIS vector layers, overlays CAD drawings, and imports road-focused LandXML designs — each through an explicit, inspectable workflow that ends in ordinary editable Road Mesh roads, not a locked-in exchange format.
GIS network import
Load road centerline layers from GeoPackage (.gpkg, preferred), zipped Shapefile (.zip with .shp/.shx/.dbf) or GeoJSON. Road Mesh reads the layer's coordinate reference system (including WKT definitions), lets you map attribute fields to lane counts, speeds and directions, builds network topology from the geometry, and runs plausibility validation before anything touches your project. Networks can also be exported back out as GeoJSON or GeoPackage layers.
CAD drawings as positioned overlays
Import an ASCII DXF drawing as a visual reference in the 3D editor. Position it either as a local engineering drawing — confirm units, pick an anchor, adjust translation, rotation, scale and vertical offset — or georeferenced via a supported EPSG code. Layer visibility, opacity, color and locking are controlled per overlay and saved with the project.
Importing and converting are deliberately separate steps. When you are ready, a conversion wizard turns selected DXF layers or individually picked entities into editable roads, with direction, lane count and width confirmed by you — nothing is silently guessed into drivable geometry.
LandXML civil designs
Road Mesh imports a road-focused subset of LandXML 1.x aimed at proposed-road designs: alignments, profiles, cross sections, corridor references and small reference surfaces. The importer shows source application, units, coordinate system and issues up front; missing units or CRS must be resolved explicitly — Road Mesh never guesses either. Map source feature codes to roles such as lane boundary, edge of pavement or curb, confirm the lane topology, inspect the preview, and convert. Committed roads are ordinary editable roads that simulate like everything else.
One model at the end
Whatever the source, the result joins the same workflow: Import → Edit → Add demand → Simulate → Analyze. Converted geometry gets lanes, junctions and a routable lane graph, so a proposed design can be simulated against measured or manual demand alongside the surrounding OSM network.
